  • The World of Overthinking

One of the greatest things that comes from anxiety is overthinking. Overthinking about work, overthinking about your friendships, overthinking what your family think, overthinking and analysing every single thing that comes into your life.

However, there are some assumptions that people think when it comes to overthinking. Some people like to “downplay” the severity of it as they just don’t see the bigger picture. But what if I told you that it consumes my life on a daily basis?

I can’t remember the last time I didn’t overthink. It’s a constant battle with my brain and well my heart.

Overthinking isn’t just thinking a lot. It’s thinking in a loop that feels productive but actually keeps you stuck.

Think of it as your brain’s threat-detection system getting jammed on. It tries to solve an emotional problem the way it would solve a maths problem, by running it over and over until there’s a perfect answer. But feelings don’t have perfect answers, so the loop never closes.

The never ending battle with the brain becomes exhausting. You just want your brain to be quite, let me have a break.

In work the other day I saw my boss come into work and I said hello to him. He said “hello Cath” and then walked off. In that moment my overthinking was off and it was quick. Within 5 minutes of him leaving I had convinced myself he was going to sack me, that he hated me as a employee, that I wasn’t working hard enough and that I simply wasn’t good enough for any promotion. In the moment I was thinking all of these scenarios, I didn’t realise I was staring into the abyss completely zoned out and that I had a full screen of orders waiting to be made up.

You find that with over-thinkers that they try really hard, sometimes too hard to engage in conversations as its clarity that everything is ok. So you don’t think I’m too annoying to have a proper conversation with. You don’t think I’m incompetent to have a full adult conversation with, it’s reassuring for a moment. Until it’s the end of the working day when you find yourself analysing every single detail of that conversation, wishing that you could have said something different hours previous. Did I sound friendly enough, did I sound too friendly? Did they understand every word I said? Did I stutter? Did they feel pressured to have a conversation with me? Do they feel sorry for me? Do you think for a moment that the thought that they just wanted to have a decent conversation with me comes to mind? It doesn’t. It never does.

Slowly but surely you start to accept your “flaws” as strengths. Little by little and day by day you start to feel the weight not become lighter but more manageable. It’s a working progress. Start reminding yourself of all the amazing qualities you have, if you can’t think of any I promise you there are some fantastic qualities about you! You just haven’t found them yet. We all think that we can manage by ourselves to pick up the pieces but it only takes one person to help the load. One person to help change that mindset and turn negatives into positives. You might not of found your person to help you yet but you will. I promise you.

  • Harsh reality

    Harsh reality

My boyfriend went home today after the best weekend of my life and to say I was sad is an understatement. I was full of happiness because I’ve never felt the love I felt ever until this weekend. However, to have it just end just simply hurt. A lot.

It’s the kind of sadness where you just want your boyfriend to turn back around and say I’m staying here forever, as if he didn’t have his own commitments. However, selfishly I just wanted him to stay. Let me be here forever with you and never say goodbye. But that’s just it, it’s simply not reality.

Falling in love is the greatest feeling I’ve ever felt. I’ve never truly been in love until recently. My entire body just feels at ease because I know I’m safe. I’m free.My anxiety isn’t screaming at me, it’s calm, it’s at bay. I don’t feel scared anymore and that’s because of you.

When on FaceTime today I was just emotional. Emotional that I was back talking to my boyfriend on a screen rather than having him in person like I did a few hours prior. However, how lucky am I to have met someone so amazing that saying goodbye is the hardest thing ever. Because they impacted your life so much that you wish time would pause and there would be infinite hours with.

There is simply not enough hours in a day with someone, even if you’re with them 24/7. One point over the weekend the boyfriend decided to go and grab us some food and bring it back to the hotel room. I sat there waiting patiently and then more patiently and then got impatient. I knew I was in deep trouble then. I missed someone that was gone for 10/15 minutes max and now you’re telling me I have to go over 2 weeks without seeing them? How am I going to cope? Truthfully I’m not coping. I’m struggling. My person isn’t next to me, he’s on a phone screen. When I saw him in person I couldn’t believe he was real! I really did find a good one. The best one.

That’s the beauty of a long distance relationship, you can love someone so much and cherish every second with them but yet again time goes too quick. I love you, always x

  • To Nyah

My best friend, Nyah, passed away on 6 February 2017, yet, over nine years since she passed away, her phone number is still saved on my phone. I don’t think I could ever get rid of it.

During times of sadness, of grief, or even when something that I’d simply have updated her on changes in my life, I like to message her.

Today’s message was a lengthy one, to say the least. I’ve recently gotten into a new relationship with a guy who’s a literal angel (don’t tell him I said that, because he’ll never let me live it down!) and I just sat there for a moment and realised that the one person who I want my boyfriend to meet the most is the person that’s no longer here.

If you have a best friend who’s on this earth, please never take it for granted, because, in every single lifetime, I’d choose to have just one more minute with her.

Hey Nyah, it’s Cath. Long time no speak, I haven’t messaged you in a long while and just thought I’d update you on some things that have recently changed in my life.

So, I got a new boyfriend after being single for 5 years after what happened to me. You know what happened as you were there—I just felt it. When I was with my abusive ex, I was hurting so badly and I always went to your bench as a comfort thing, because it just felt like you were able to give me strength that I needed during that time. I honestly don’t think I would be here today if it wasn’t for you back then.

Nyah, I needed your strength then, because I wasn’t strong enough to do it by myself, but, now I’m telling you that I don’t need your strength anymore. I’ve hit the jackpot with this guy I’ve met, and, honestly, the thought of him leaving tomorrow is already breaking my heart, because I haven’t felt this much love or affection, or been treated this nicely ever. I honestly wish you could have met him. I just know you would have loved him. He’s literally a male version of me but better. I tell him all about you, about how you changed my life for the better, and how I’m a stronger person today because of you.

I know that I’m going on a bit, and, honestly it’s definitely my style to do long-ass messages, but I just wanted to say that I love you, I miss you, and I think of you every single day. I might not need your strength anymore, but I’ll always need you in my heart. Say hello to grandad and Mr Max from me. I miss you and I love you.

  • 3 weeks to Tenerife

It’s 3 weeks until I go on my first holiday without my family, and, to say I’m excited is an understatement. However, one of our mates let us know today that another person is coming along, so that makes the total amount of people going 10—lethal to say the least.

I can’t decide what part I’m most excited about: the partying, the monkey park, or the endless amount of alcohol in our systems. This trip has come by quickly and it’s hard to wrap my head around the fact that I’ll be there in 3 weeks. However, 4 hours without a vape might be hard. 🤣
